The aim of this project was to build fog collectors near the village of Tojquia to supply the villagers with fresh water. Before this project the water supply to the village was from roof collectors into large domestic polythene tanks. This water often became stale and infected with bacteria and insect larvae during the dry season when it remained in the tanks and whilst it is suitable for washing it needs boiling before drinking. The fog water provides a supply of fresh clean water during the dry season (Jan-May).
Our task was to help with the construction of the fog collectors and to lay pipes to the plastic storage tanks. The RSIS team were responsible for cutting and sewing 16 nets and cutting the cables into suitable lengths and joining the guttering for the fog collectors. Scissors and thread were used for the netting. The terrain was varied but it was generally steep, sometimes rocky with trees and ever-present tree roots to overcome. Most of the hard, physical work was carried out by the men of the village using picks, hoes and shovels.
4 day Recreation Period (Cultural Phase)
4 days were spent at the end of the project to give the participants a break before they flew home. This was organised through an outdoor activities company, “Old Town Outfitters”. They provided 2 excellent guides: Wilbur and Rich.
Day 1 – a steep volcano climb to near to top of a local volcano, Pacaya (2250 m) where it was possible to see molten lava.
Day 2 and 3– a trip to Monterrico on the Pacific coast to vist a turtle sanctuary and kayak in the mangrove swamps.
Day 4 - day spent in Antigua – shopping site-seeing and relaxing before the return flights the next day.
