CANSA Shavathon
Never shy to take up a challenge, the learners and staff of St Stithians Girls’ College, set out to raise a total of R14 000 for CANSA through the annual Shavathon initiative.
This amount meant that over 90% of the girls in our school would have to choose to have their hair sprayed and make a R25 donation to CANSA.
On Thursday 25 February 2010 at our annual Inter-House Aquatics event, the girls, staff & even some parents of our school set about reaching the R14 000 goal. Despite dreadful weather and lack of a PA system to gather more support (the rain really dampened everything except our spirit!) we did manage to reach and pass our goal, raising a total of R14 500!
Apart from the desire to do ‘good’ and to spray their hair, the girls had an extra reason for taking up the challenge. Members of our staff offered to have their heads shaved if we reached our target. This had been done before in 2009, where the girls delighted at seeing the male members of our staff shave their heads. In 2010 there was even more of a draw card as two female members of staff offered to have a public head shave, if we hit our goal!
Two female members of staff, very bravely allowed their heads to be shaved in front of over 500 amazed learners! To make the moment even more special, a member of staff who is currently battling with cancer herself did the honour of shaving their heads – it was an emotional moment for all involved.
The goal now is to raise even more money in 2011 – maybe the CEO of Round Square will offer to be the draw card!
