In late May 2010 Elliot Black, a Gap Student at Brookhouse International School and Aiden Scott, a History/Archaeology A-level lecturer in the UK will attempt to run the 110km route cross-country between Nairobi and Naivasha in Kenya within a period of two days. The challenge is not limited to the mere distance of running the equivalent of three marathons within the space of two days but also includes tough terrain at high altitude and a long climb up the side of the Rift Valley and indeed down the other side.
The reason we are pushing ourselves to the limit is simple: to raise funds for Kigulu Slum School and Orphanage. Kigulu is a wonderful school operating in the most squalid conditions within Africa’s largest slum, Kibera in Nairobi. It currently looks after 50 children, all of whom are orphans, mostly through HIV/AIDs or indeed from other social problems that face the 1.2 million inhabitants of the 2.5 square kms that is the reality of life in Kibera. Amongst the problems faced are high levels of wanton violence, domestic abuse and a general lack of security or medical service
There are some 50,000 orphans in Kibera. The charity is in serious trouble with a lack of resources with which to work. They have just finished building a new school complex but need help with paying teachers, and finishing equipping the classrooms. This charity does not have the backing of a large national charity, and is currently supported by Kenton College, another school in Nairobi.
Brookhouse International School, in line with the Round Square ethos, has joined in this charitable effort by providing technical and material support to the team undertaking this venture.
