Vuthlari

The King Constantine Medal is a year 12 award at Penryn College where the staff and management recognise one year 12 individual who has embodied at least one of the six ideals of Round Square during their time at the school.

In October 2016, Vuthlari Shirindza was awarded the medal in recognition of her exceptional leadership abilities. Vuthlari served as Head Girl in 2016, and in this role she proved a mature, insightful and open-minded leader.

Vuthlari is especially passionate about women’s rights and in her final year, she arranged several events centred on this issue. Most notably, she arranged a morning tea for the female staff and scholars to which she invited guest speaker Nompendula Mkhatshwa, the SRC President of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Vuthlari has also been an active role player in amending the school’s hair policies to recognise ethnically diverse and ever changing identities in the modern world.

Receiving this medal is not Vuthlari’s first encounter with Round Square. She was a delegate of the Round Square International Conference in 2015 and participated in an international exchange in 2014. She is a perfect example of a Round Square scholar – holistically developed and globally minded.

We at Penryn College are proud of Vuthlari’s efforts and will continue to watch her with interest.
