Join our Virtual RS International Service Project for One Million Beehives

Posted: 26 January 2022

Thank you everyone that has submitted a pledge for the One Million Beehives Virtual RS Service Project. This is a reminder for those that have not yet signed up but would like to. Please add your school name to the list before the end of February, when we will combine all of the pledges received to create a fundraising target for our project.

Please complete THIS FORM with as much information as you can at this stage. Ideally, please make a pledge (you can always add to it later) to fund a number of beehives (In South African Rand, a beehive costs ZAR 1,750 about USD $120) or complete beekeeping kits (the cost of setting up a new beekeeper with a complete beekeeping kit is ZAR 35,000 about USD $2,400).

For those that are wondering what on earth we are talking about, here is a refresher: At the RSIC2021 we introduced you to Lesego Serolong, former pupil of RS school Tiger Kloof, and her organisation, Bokamoso Impact Investments, where Bee Loved Honey is making a positive and sustainable difference not just to the environment but also to the prosperity of Lesego’s local community in South Africa. We asked you to get involved with our Virtual RS Service Project in 2022, for which we will be supporting Lesego’s One Million Beehives Initiative. To refresh your memory, please watch the film on our YouTube channel HERE.

If you have already completed the pledge form and signed up for the project, we will be inviting you to bring some students along to a virtual launch event at the beginning of March (likely to be on 1st March – we will confirm next week). During the event Lesego will explain a bit more about the campaign, and the importance of bees, as well as answering questions from participating students. We will then move into breakouts where students will be encouraged to discuss fundraising ideas, connect their beekeeping clubs (for schools that have them) and share recipes for cooking with honey.

Over the months that follow we will be hosting a series of drop-in sessions for participating students and schools, where they can find out more about the science behind beekeeping from Lesego and her team, with topics such as the process of pollination, and the business of beekeeping. Lesego has also offered to speak at schools’ virtual and physical events (her travel schedule permitting). If you would like to put in a request for this please email stacey@roundsquare,org. Lesego will be visiting the USA, UK and Germany in the next few months. At the RSIC2022 in the UK in September we will be sharing and celebrating progress made on this project.
