The 2012 Kurt Hahn Award was awarded to 11-year-old Ella McAuliffe from UWCSEA in Singapore for her devotion and efforts in raising $25,000 to build a school in Cambodia.

At the age of seven as a Year 2 student, Ella began taking independent action to support the work of Tabitha Foundation Cambodia, who operate within fifteen provinces in Cambodia providing programs that make significant changes and development in the lives of the Cambodian people. Driven by her conviction that all children have a right to an education, Ella began her efforts to raise enough funds to build a school in Cambodia, giving herself a target of two years. By the time Ella finished Year 5, Srey Bantaey School in Svey Rieng province, opened its doors to 222 children thanks to the money she raised.

“There are three types of people in this world; those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened” explains Ella who always strives to be someone who makes things happen and encourages others to do the same.
