RSIS Vietnam 2024: ‘Rocky’ The Hole

Share With

We were woken up by our natural alarm – being the wildlife we are surrounded with – keeping us on schedule and being a vital part of our daily routine. Luckily we arrived to a delicious fresh breakfast, sore but satisfied from the day before. Our meal rejuvenated our body’s and spirits in preparation for the busy work day ahead.

Today our group was focusing on solar panels to incorporate renewable energy into the rural village of Xom Phay. In the lush environment, we learned new skills such as digging deep holes in difficult locations, mixing cement, and distributing supplies all taught by patient, talented locals. Their mere presence provided ample motivation for the work we were able to achieve. After working very hard we joined back together as a community with the other working groups to enjoy another incredible meal. This gave us an opportunity to discuss and recount our individual experiences and memories from the day so far. After a restful lunch, work was still ahead of us and we begun adding the finishing touches to our solar panels, and then continued this sustainable focus at the towns local elementary school.

We received a very warm welcome from all the energetic kids and gained valuable insights regarding the school system as it differed from our own individual backgrounds. It also provided an opportunity to connect with the local children who were extremely generous and kind, gifting stickers and homemade toys specifically made for us. It was surreal experience to be surrounded by such love and admiration.

Personally, this was the highlight of our day, and when we saw these beautiful group of girls standing off to the side, nervous to approach us, we were immediately touched by their heartfelt expressions and beckoned them over. They were so sweet, holding our hands and creating love hearts with our hands, with a constant smile on their faces. It was impossible not to feel special around such genuine happiness. It put the entire work day into perspective. Overall, today was a rewarding learning experience one of many throughout the RSIS project to come.
