KC Public School Students Explore Adventure and Service in the Saach Pass Region

Twenty students and five teachers from KC Public School in Jammu in India travelled to the Saach Pass region of Himachal Pradesh, India, for their annual Round Square adventure expedition. Set within the remote Pir Panjaal Himalayan range, the expedition combined physical challenge with opportunities for service and connection with local communities.

For several years, KC Public School has chosen this region for its annual adventure programme because of its pristine natural environment, rich biodiversity and limited tourist traffic. While reaching Saach Pass is a significant achievement, the expedition is designed to offer students experiences that extend beyond the mountains themselves.

A highlight of the journey was the group’s visit to Tepa village, the last settlement in the valley and home to a government middle school with which KC Public School has built a lasting friendship. Since first connecting with the school in 2019, students have returned each year to spend time with their peers, sharing gifts of stationery and sweets, taking part in activities together and strengthening the bond between the two schools.

The visits help students develop a greater appreciation of the importance of education and the different realities experienced by young people living in remote rural communities. Through these interactions, students are encouraged to support and celebrate the efforts of their peers who pursue their education despite limited resources.

The adventure aspect of the expedition centred on exploring the high-altitude landscape of the Pir Panjaal mountains. To prepare for the ascent to Saach Pass, students first completed an acclimatisation trek through alpine forest to Devi Kothi village. The six-kilometre uphill route challenged participants physically while helping them adapt to the lower oxygen levels found higher in the Himalayas. Along the way, students enjoyed panoramic mountain views and visited the ancient Chamunda Temple.

The following day, the group continued its journey towards Saach Pass. As they climbed higher, frequent stops were needed as the air became thinner and the effects of altitude more noticeable. Reaching the pass at almost 14,500 feet was a rewarding moment and a testament to the students’ determination and preparation.

Students spent time exploring the area, observing the dramatic mountain landscape and reflecting on what they had experienced during the expedition.

Reflecting on the journey, Grade 10 student Sanvi said: “Saach Pass trek was much more than an adventure. It was a journey of growth, resilience and gratitude. Dancing and interacting with children of Tepa taught me the true values of compassion, empathy and gratitude. It reminded me that even small acts of kindness can create lasting memories and meaningful connection.”

Fellow Grade 10 student Anshika highlighted the impact of meeting students from the local community. “This visit taught me that real learning happens when we step outside the classroom and connect with people.”
