IF WE CAN BE MADE TO SEE IT,
PERHAPS FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES
WE WILL BE UNWILLING TO SETTLE FOR LESS.”

Discovering a Sense of Responsibility

Responsibility lies at the heart of Round Square’s Discovery framework. It is not something confined to classroom theory or set tasks, but an attitude, a commitment, and a way of living. Across Round Square schools worldwide, students and educators are finding creative and authentic ways to nurture a Sense of Responsibility—to themselves, to each other, and to the wider world.

So what does this look like in practice? Here are some stories from the RS Community:

Case Study: Daily Assemblies

At Seth Anandram Jaipuria School Lucknow in India, student-led daily assemblies build students’ Spirit of Adventure through the challenge of public speaking.

Kalyan Balaven, Headteacher at the Dunn School in America, writes about his former teacher, Mr. Lindsey, and explores how we can incorporate a sense of responsibility into everyday teaching and learning in the Age of AI.

Round Square: a community of schools

Round Square is an international community of 280+ schools in 50 countries that collaborate on character education around six themes (the Round Square IDEALS) – International Understanding, Democracy, Environmental Stewardship, Adventure, Leadership and Service

Understanding that many of life’s important lessons come from practical experience, we use experiential learning, to shape students’ character, and build their capacity to make a positive difference in the world as globally-minded, courageous and compassionate leaders.

An Introduction to Round Square

By exploring the six RS IDEALS, students set off on a learning journey which leads them to 12 Discoveries of personal virtues and attributes, building the capabilities and confidence needed to make a positive difference in the world.

Round Square schools are encouraged to interpret and apply this teaching and learning framework in ways most appropriate to their culture, style and facilities.

In sharing and comparing their different approaches, schools develop good-practice around the six IDEALS, with a common aim to build character and realise potential in their students.
