60 for 60 Challenge: Penryn, South Africa

Penryn’s Junior Preparatory (JP) came together on Friday 5 June to celebrate an interactive, hands-on learning journey inspired by Round Square’s 60th anniversary celebrations. Grades 1 to 3 scholars began the day together collaborating, solving problems, and tackling a variety of exciting “60-second challenges” linked to the Round Square IDEALS.

The celebrations also coincided with World Environment Day, giving scholars the opportunity to explore ways to combat climate change and reflect on the importance of becoming Eco Warriors who care for and protect our planet.

Throughout the day, scholars participated in activities connected to each of the six Round Square IDEALS:

Internationalism – Scholars discovered the origins of Round Square, tracing its roots back to the devastating earthquake in Greece in 1953 and learning how this eventually led to the first Round Square gathering at Gordonstoun in Scotland.

Democracy – Through challenges and discussions, scholars recognised that every individual is valued and has a meaningful contribution to make within their community and country.

Environmentalism – From a litter-free picnic to a “Stop Climate Change” parade and recycling challenges, scholars developed a greater awareness of their responsibility to care for the environment and were reminded that there is no Planet B.

Adventure – Interactive challenges encouraged scholars to step outside their comfort zones, fostering bravery, resilience, and teamwork across age groups.

Leadership – Grade 3 scholars took on leadership roles by guiding younger scholars throughout the day and championing many of the activities and service initiatives.

Service – The collection of recycled materials culminated in the creation of recycled toys, which will later be donated to several Penreach partner schools. Through the Adopt-a-School Programme, Junior Prep scholars continue to contribute meaningfully to the wider community.

As part of the 60th birthday celebrations, scholars have also been collecting 60 small yoghurt tubs — a target they are close to achieving — and bringing their “brown coins” to school in an effort to fill all 60 containers.

The celebrations will continue throughout the year. During Term 3, College scholars will create a mural showcasing the Round Square IDEALS and their discoveries through 60 individual squares. In addition, every tutor group will be challenged to collect 60 cans of food for donation to members of the extended Penryn community as part of the Christmas Grocery Project later this year.
