Updated: We started the day doing the last of our work in South Africa finishing the last of our small projects. We cleaned up and helped to prepare for the village ceremony about the construction and advancements of the crèche.
We also set up and laid out many of our donations, consisting of educational material and toys, to help enrich the learning and happiness of the children, who enjoyed the games and colouring very much. This event was attended by over 200 members of the community along with guests from educational backgrounds that gave some insight into their roles and appreciation for the vital effect the crèche will play in the village.
Some round square students also stood up to speak on our behalf about our hopes for the crèche’s future. This was supplemented by excellent traditional performances and cultural dances from our peers from New Zealand and Kenya.
We had a wonderful meal prepared by the local community, and seeing that everyone celebrated together, dancing and singing traditional songs, it made this event so special and fun. Looking back now, we realise how many different memories and friendships we made along the way that we won’t forget. This event showed us the impact that our work on the crèche will have on this community, making all the hard work worth it.
We finalised the ceremony by taking a final picture with the building, all smiling. We specially thanked Trey, who led and supported the construction work during the whole project and made the it run smoothly.
