Daly College awards King Constantine Award to Raina Modi

Posted: 15 December 2021

Daly College presented Raina Modi the King Constantine Medal during this year’s Annual Prize Giving in recognition of her dedication to serve underprivileged children.

Raina is Vice President of both fundraising and service on her schools’ Round Square Student Committee and is also a part of their social service club. Being a member of this programme, Raina has participated in Daly College’s ‘Girls Washroom Project’ to raise money and construct twin female washrooms with septic tanks in 20 schools. These dedicated washrooms afford girls access to private bathrooms and encourages them to stay in school longer.

In 2019 Raina was part of the Panna Tiger Reserve Community service, an awareness campaign for the conservation of Emerald Tigers. “The Panna Tiger Reserve Community service and wildlife awareness project was one of the most fulfilling experiences I’ve ever had. Our group would start work at 7 in the morning and would go on till 5-6pm. We started off by making the cement mixture, carrying bricks, learning how to build walls etc. Our goal was to construct clean washrooms and classrooms for the children of that area.”

Raina also participated in Daly College’s 13th annual eye camp. Together the team of students, teachers, optometrists, and a doctor were able to provide free eye care services to local people who cannot access medical facilities and or lack important eye care awareness. The Eye camp was the schools biggest drive to date, seeing a total of 9729 patients, 8605 of which were given glasses and cataracts was identified in over 300 patients.

Her compassion and service to making education accessible for all is honourable but does not end there. Raina supports the education of underprivileged children by sponsoring two children every year through the NGO ‘Vijay Social Welfare Society’ who she has continuously worked alongside for the past 5 years.

“With Vijay social welfare society, I worked with a school ‘Vihaan Vidyapeeth’ wherein every Saturday we would go to the school and teach children of all age groups ranging from 6-16 about different topics every week. We would take English, Maths, Science, Geography and Environmental Science sessions. We would also allocate enough time for outdoor and fun activities… [and] held various sessions for the major festivals in India”.

For the last two years, Raina has worked with the NGO ‘Khushi’ who provide a variety of services to underprivileged people including mobile healthcare, assistance with water management, disaster relief and rehabilitation. She volunteers to help with their education services. “I would take online classes every Wednesday and would personally teach them the basics of English and would give them activities like crosswords, word search, idioms, similes and reading material.”

“Personally, social service gives me self-satisfaction and immense joy. It has made me understand how fortunate I am and motivates me to support those in need.”

“Raina was considered for this award because she worked for a good cause. Only a life lived in the service to others is worth living. Congratulations Raina.” Says Sharmila Dominic, Daly College’s Rep.

Raina Graduated Daly College in 2020 and is currently in her second year of Culinary School; “I am currently … chasing after my childhood dream to become a pastry chef. I wish to open my own patisserie starting from my hometown Indore. I am set to graduate in 2024 and plan to specialize in bakery and pastry in Paris after College.”
